"The man seemed strangely reluctant to accept the accolades, and the fact of his elevation -- a reluctance that indicated that the events of October 31, 1984 still weighed heavy on his mind."
Why do journos try to be mind readers?
May be Pranav Mukharjee just needs prozac or something.

Cambridge confirms Rahul's MPhil
rediff.com decided to check this and so got in touch by e-mail with the Old Records Office at Trinity College.
The request was apparently forwarded to the press and publications office of Cambridge University, from where rediff.com received an official reply today.
It said: 'Rahul Gandhi was a student at the University of Cambridge as a member of Trinity College from 1994 to 1995, and was awarded an MPhil in Development Economics.'

Rahul Up Close & Personal (This is old post on rediff front page today)
So did he complete his studies in Harvard?
A little bit of confusion there. He did complete the four-year AB course in economics, but did not get his degree since he did not get the required grades.

06:25 pm - Uncle Sam...
How to be a millionaire?
Join US Army, attack other people's countries, kill them, loot them and then sue the hell outta them and be a millionaire. But worry not, Uncle Sam will screw you right back.

CSPAN is the most entertaining channel these days. Last week something caught my attention while channel surfing and then couple of days later I saw an article about same on Salon.

Since 1996 American Citizens have right to sue foreign governments in US courts!!
Under this law, 17 gulf war American POWs sued Iraq in a DC court and judge gave the judgment against Iraq in the amount of more than $1 billion.
The judge granted a plaintiffs' request to temporarily freeze about $1.7 billion in Iraqi assets held in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Lawyers for the POWs have been eyeing those funds for months.
But as soon as this war started Bushie threw out that judgment and granted Iraq special immunity against this law!! Now Busie wants to keep this full amount to "re-build" Iraq!!!! heehee.

05:00 pm - Rushdie's Bombay
"Many youngsters leave home to find themselves; I had to cross oceans just to exit Wombay, the parental body. I flew away to get myself born. But like a longtime cigarette smoker who manages to quit, I have forgotten the taste and kick of the old abandoned drug. Imagine, if you will, the elaborately ritualised(yes, and marriage-obsessed) formal society of Jane Austen, grafted on to the stenchy, pullulating London beloved of Dickens, as full of chaos and surprises as a rotting fish full of writhing worms; wash & rollick the whole into a Shandy-and-arrack cocktail; colour it magenta, vermilion, scartet, lime; sprinkle with crooks & bawds, and you have something like my fabulous home town. I gave it up, true enough; but don't ask me to say it wasn't one hell of a place.
(And there were other reasons too, let's be frank. For example, the threats against my person. If I'd stayed, it could have cost me my life.)"
- Rai Merchant in The Ground Beneath Her Feet.

I am currently reading The Ground Beneath Her Feet. I have only completed 5 chapters where he writes mostly about 50's Bombay and India introducing central characters...Frankly, I am not really impressed so far. Obnoxious characters, pretentious ramblings and self-indulgent rants sprinkled with some social commentary...Its difficult to separate Rushdie’s personal life from this fiction. I just checked book reviews on net and most of them are positive... :o)

04:29 pm - Baby,
I'll Be The One, Imagine that your heart would beat for me
you know that I'm waiting patiently
till you're by my side; every day; every night
baby you're the one I need can't you see
you know my heart is beating just for you
baby I don't seem to find the clue
to be by your side; every day and every night
but I feel my heart is aching without you

Maybe I'll be the one, if you want me here to stay
Maybe I'll be the one, to guide you all the way
No I'm never gonna hurt you, you're always on my mind
and I'll be the one untill the end of time

Sure there is a way for you and me, together and forever it will be
I'll be by your side, every day and every night
but I'll feel my heart is aching without you

Maybe I'll be the one, if you want me here to stay
Maybe I'll be the one, to guide you all the way
No I'm never gonna hurt you, you're always on my mind
and I'll be the one until the end of time

11:47 pm - Hindi movie update...
I didn't watch any hindi movie after Sep. 6th, Hungama was the last one I watched. So had to catch up with all of them last week.
I watched Rules, Baghban, Boom and Mumbai Matinee.
Boom is worst bollywood movie I have ever watched. Do not watch it. I could watch it only for a few minutes.
Same for Mumbai Matinee. I hated Rahul Bose in this movie as much as I liked him in Mr.& Mrs. Iyer. Stupid movie.
And what's with every movie featuring gay character these days?

Rules was okay. Some of the scenes are really sweet and Milind Soman is divine. :-)
Baghban gave me severe headache. The portrayal of parents-kids relationship in fist half of the movie is so superficial(they come to parents' place, sing a song and go back!). No wonder they treat their parents the way they do in second half. Salman Khan and his goody goody acting is very irritating too. My mom too thought that Baghban was hilarious!!

I SO want to watch a really entertaining hindi movie....

03:11 pm - Social work - a profession
I don't really understand why people romanticize the social work they do-especially what they do in third world countries? Their talks generally communicate pity. Their ideological convictions are admirable but what they are doing is nothing more than being in one of the healing professions. In broader sense, they are observers who are trying to impose their ethical/financial/moral/social/religious values on people they observe.
Personally, I admire emotional gestures more than ideological gestures. Idealists generally are slaves of their theoretical passions.

08:39 am - Tell me...
Okay,
exercise time for you all...

Please tell me

1)What are you most afraid of admitting to yourself and others?

2)What do you love about yourself?

For example, I fear any type of competition. The moment someone starts competing with me, I quit. Because I am afraid of admitting that I consider myself superior to my peers and think that I am beyond any kind of rivalry.
I am also afraid of admitting that I am emotionally detached most of the time and have fear of commitment.

What I love about myself is that I am pillar of strength for most people around me. No matter how tough things get outside, I can still maintain Buddha like calmness and take control of the situation.

02:43 pm - Assh*les Online...
Please tell me how to sue AOL.
Get this -
I was fed up with Verizon DSL and its service, so I ordered Roadrunner high speed internet in September.
Before I got Roadrunner connection, I had to use AOL for 3 days.
Now AOL CDs that arrive in your mailboxes everyday say that you have 1000 hrs free etc. Still when you install it, you have to give your credit card information to them.
I did all that and used AOL just for 3 days in September.
Today, I noticed that they have been deducting $23.90 every month even if I never used it after Sep. 17th.
When I called them they refused to refund me my 47.80 bucks that they have deducted from my account.
The person on phone was extremely unpleasant. I had to shout and scream at him for 20 minutes to get my account deleted from his system and to stop being charged in future(I am not getting the refund).
Every telephone or internet service provider in this country is sleazy blood sucking bastard but this is the height of everything I have experienced so far.

04:04 pm - This and that...
Sometimes spooky things happen with me that do not mean anything but still...

Just now this happened - I was reading a magazine and I saw this eye-glasses commercial that reminded me of Johny Depp because lately he has been wearing same dorky glasses during his public appearances on TV.
At this same moment looking at glasses, thinking about Johny Depp and his weird glasses and hat, I turned on TV and there he was on E!(they were talking about his hookup with Winona Ryder).
Not only that, since morning I am humming Sunshiny day, and the moment I turned on TV, radio started playing Sunshiny day...

In other news, Asheville plan is postponed until tomorrow...apperantely all of us overslept today.

I turn off phone ringers during weekends...so every time my dad calls, my ringers are off...I missed Papa's call today too. Feeling guilty about it. :(

It's still sunshiny day outside and I am off to local state fair ground. They have annual fair there and I promised my friend's daughters that I will take them there this weekend. :o)

07:36 pm - Snail mails suck...
I don't really understand why do FedEx guys deliver all my parcels to Apt. office even when I am at home. Here I am waiting for the parcel for past two days...and when I tracked it online, it says its already delivered y'day. Grrr...

Last month, I was to receive 3 cards posted from India. I got one. The second one was torn apart and packed in plastic bag with a note on it - 'we apologize for the damaged mail. We are working on improving our mail scanning machine'. I never got third card, I just got its torn envelope with my address on it and with same apology stamp on it. I am so pissed off. Where did the card go? Local post office says that mails are scanned when they arrive in USA and it gets damaged during scanning and its not their responsibility. Grrrrr....

Indiatimes deducted double amount from my account for a single item I purchased. They returned that amount after 4-5 emails I wrote to them. So I think its okay. But the recipient has still not received the item that Indiatimes claims to have shipped 10days back. Grrr...
